Chinese Learners Learning Vietnamese Actually Have a "Backdoor"

Many people are scared off by the myriad diacritics in Vietnamese. But interestingly: a large amount of Vietnamese vocabulary comes from Chinese (Sino-Vietnamese words), such as "công ty" (company), "kinh tế" (economy), "điện thoại" (telephone). A Chinese person seeing "kinh tế", even if they cannot pronounce it, can often make a broadly correct guess.

This is precisely our core approach to teaching Vietnamese — using the method of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (teaching foreigners Chinese) in reverse to teach Chinese people Vietnamese.

Three Hidden Advantages

1. Chinese-Origin Vocabulary = Free Vocabulary Boost Vietnamese has 60%+ daily/written words of Chinese origin. First grasp this batch of "Chinese-looking" words, vocabulary immediately takes off, then supplement with pure Vietnamese words.

2. Tones Are Actually Not Difficult Vietnamese has 6 tones, Mandarin Chinese has 4. Chinese ears are sensitive to tones; just need to map the four Mandarin tone categories (yin ping, yang ping, shang, qu) to Vietnamese's six tones: level, falling, dipping, rising, high-rising, heavy. We create minimal pair training, and in a few days you can discriminate.

3. Grammar Is More Friendly Than English Vietnamese word order is SVO, almost identical to Chinese; no verb conjugation, no singular/plural inflection. For Chinese native speakers, grammar burden is far lower than English.
